Column inspection

The Challenge

Working above sharks is not your every day scaffold job, but when SEA Life at the Mall of America needed to repair and inspect structural columns, they faced a unique challenge: the work zone was directly above an active aquarium exhibit. To accomplish this, Infinity Scaffold was brought in to engineer a safe, clean, and non-invasive access solution—one that protected workers, the structure, and the marine environment below.

our solution

Infinity Scaffold designed and installed a hanging system scaffold set suspended by overhead beams and wrapped in a poly enclosure. Our team suited up with life preservers and fall protection, installing the set using a raft. The scaffolding wrapped around the column, providing full access for repair and inspection.

Key elements of the solution:

  • Suspension from existing steel beams using non-abrasive clamps/hooks that prevented coatings from chipping and falling into the water
  • Clean, new equipment to eliminate the risk of contaminating the water
  •  A raft-based installation process, allowing the crew to work safely above the exhibit
  • Minimal impact on the habitat, maintaining full containment of tools and materials
